Waste and marine litter are a significant issue, impacting ecosystems, economies and societies. Through a range of activities, GRID-Arendal works towards a pollution-free planet with healthy ecosystems.
To tackle the world challenge of pollution and waste, GRID-Arendal supports global policy development through the UN frameworks, including the UN Environment Assembly and the Basel Convention. GRID-Arendal contributes to expert working groups on waste and marine litter and develops products to inform international policy-makers. Marine litter, circular economy, waste management, waste trade and sanitation and wastewater are topics that GRID-Arendal specializes in.
GRID-Arendal supports developing countries with capacity building and research on the impact of waste and marine litter, their sources and pathways. Our staff are developing technical tools and expertise to address waste and marine litter, including the leakage of plastic waste into the environment. We work closely with the Regional Seas Conventions and other UN agencies to find regional and global solutions to tackle the issue of waste and marine pollution.
For many years, GRID-Arendal has worked with wastewater and sanitation in Africa in conjunction with UN Environment and the African Development Bank. The project profiles the state of and trends in wastewater management and sanitation delivery on the African continent, generating a range of communication and outreach products, including videos, StoryMaps, news and policy briefs, and atlases.
