made possible through collaboration with partners and donors.
Environmentally sound management of household waste is one of the challenges faced by national governments and municipalities, particularly in developing countries, countries with economies in transition and small island developing states.
In 2015 the Household Waste Partnership of the Basel Convention was established by COP 12 with the objective to promote the environmentally sound management of household waste including its prevention and minimization, and enabling the decoupling of economic growth and environmental impacts associated with the generation of household waste and its initial handling by the public in their households.
In 2017 GRID-Arendal started supporting the Household Waste Partnership of the Basel Convention by developing the Household Waste Management Guidance, under the NORAD Waste Action Package. The document provides guidance on the environmentally sound management of household wastes, pursuant to decisions BC-13/14 and BC-14/19 of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal.
