GEF Marine Plastics Project
Developing a strategic roadmap to help guide the transition to circular plastic economies at local, national and global scales.
GRID-Arendal supports countries in their efforts to realize their 2030 targets under the Sustainable Development Goals. Among target goals of interest to GRID-Arendal is the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, on clean water and sanitation, particularly target 6.3: “By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally."
Our efforts will help profile the state of and trends in wastewater management and sanitation delivery on the African continent through the generation of a range of communication and outreach products, including explanatory videos, multimedia stories, news stories, policy briefs, and an atlas.
Africa’s slow pace in meeting sanitation targets calls for practical and transformative solutions in the management of wastewater and provision of sanitation services. Such solutions will help to boost public health and secure the sustainability of Africa’s natural resources. They can also trigger wiser investments in integrated wastewater management and employment opportunities while ensuring the integrity of water resources and water-based ecosystems. The need for solutions is made more urgent by rapid population growth and urbanization rates (and hence rising waste production levels), industrialization, and low resilience to climate change impacts.
