The number of plastic waste initiatives has increased significantly over the last decade, together with our knowledge of plastic waste and its implications for human health and the environment. This review, which is based on a sample of 60 global and 37 regional initiatives, indicates important thematical and geographical gaps in efforts towards solving the plastic crises. Finally, this review proposes concrete recommendations for the consideration of the decision makers and stakeholders involved in combating global plastic pollution.
