Wastewater management and sanitation provision in Africa
Developing and disseminating knowledge towards enhancing wastewater management and sanitation service delivery in Africa.
The relationship between sanitation and wastewater management is crucial in terms of Africa’s social, economic and ecological concerns. Providing adequate sanitation with proper wastewater treatment represents an opportunity in an era of increasing need to reclaim vital waste resources and lead the way towards the realization of a circular economy.
This story map illustrates challenges associated with the inadequate infrastructure for sanitation provision and wastewater management in Africa at a time when volumes are increasing due to population growth, and expansion in industry and agriculture. Using case studies from the Nairobi River catchment area (Kenya) and examples from across Africa, the story map discusses the causes and impacts of lack of proper sanitation and poor wastewater treatment and also offers some solutions.
