About Maria Tsakona
Maria Tsakona
Senior Expert, Waste and Marine Litter (Consultant)
Phone: +47 404 06 132 and +30 6945353458

I have been working in the field of waste and resource management for more than 13 years, providing innovative advisory and support services to businesses, public authorities, NGOs and policymakers in environmental and natural resource management. I hold a degree in Environmental Engineering (MSc) and have experience directing and managing environmental engineering projects in the field of solid waste and resource management: formulation of waste management plans and strategies, reuse and recycling programs, environmental impact assessment studies and feasibility studies. I have participated in several EU-funded projects and have experience in information and communications technology (ICT) tools in environmental management.

During the past decade, I had the opportunity to be a member of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) and participate in several international projects, which increased my understanding of major global waste management challenges and opportunities. In 2016, I founded the Women of Waste initiative supported by ISWA, with the aim of bringing visibility to women’s work and supporting women in the waste sector. During the same period I also joined the ISWA Marine Litter Task Force.

Plastic marine pollution has attracted my attention since 2013 and is the reason I moved from Athens, Greece, to GRID-Arendal to work with a great team of international experts in addressing this global issue.

My vision is “closing the loop”. I see myself as part of the solution for green sustainable development, applying the principles of circular economy. I approach each project as an opportunity to strengthen the economy, society and the natural world. In order to achieve this, I participate in multidisciplinary teams to develop an overview perspective and bring innovative ideas and sustainable solutions into my projects.

I do not forget to enjoy life. I love espresso, good red wine with friends and Latin dance. If you hang around with me, I can teach you some salsa moves.
