A stronger role for women in the waste sector
The Challenge
Women have the right to safe jobs and equal opportunities. In Nepal, thousands of women working in the informal waste sector face discrimination and violence while providing essential services and preventing waste from being disposed of in landfills or littered in the environment.
The Project
To address these challenges GRID-Arendal together with our partners Creasion, launched a project entitled “Enabling gender-responsive and inclusive waste management systems through awareness-raising and capacity building for local authorities in Nepal”. It will support Nepal’s just transition toward inclusive, resilient, and resource-efficient systems while promoting safer and more environmentally sound waste management practices. More concretely, this project aims to support local-level decision-makers in recognizing and creating opportunities for women in the informal waste sector.
Our Transformative Approach

Why It Matters
Waste management is not only a technical matter—it is also about people, stronger communities, and a healthy environment. The sector creates livelihood opportunities and helps build healthy communities where people respect one another and women feel safe while doing their jobs.
