Since the Holocene (the past 10,000 years or the so-called Little Ice Age,) there has been a noted overall retreat in glaciers Worldwide, but the actual rate of retreat has been accelerating rapidly since 1976. Although it was previously believed that the Antarctic ice sheet would gain mass to 2100, due to increased snow fall, satellite data now reveals that the Antarctic ice sheet is losing mass, and rapidly.
