Nenenteiti Teariki-Ruatu about the opportunities and challenges of PANORAMA
Nenenteiti Teariki-Ruatu works for the Ministry of Environment, Lands & Agricultural Development in Kiribati. In this video she tells us about the opportunities but also challenges that she sees when trying to work with the PANORAMA - Solutions for a Healthy Planet online platform. Nenenteiti attended the Blue solutions Fair in March 2018 where she learned about the solution methodology, explored the PANORAMA online platform, exchanged knowledge with other practitioners from the Asia-Pacific region and developed a new solution approach based on the newly received information.
During the Blue Solutions Fair, she shared her experiences around a Ramsar Site, which is being co-managed between villagers themselves and the Kiribati Government, and is the first one of its kind in terms of local communities taking the drivers seat, in managing, protecting and sustainably utilizing resources that support local livelihoods and socio-economic needs at a grassroots level. A range of social, economic and environmental problems is threatening the overall status of the Ramsar Site. Global climate change and its impacts are exacerbating these problems.
The Ministry is working closely with the village to facilitate effective community-based integrated environmental protection and management, while safeguarding sustainable biodiversity-based livelihoods that support socio-economic needs in the face of global climate change.
