Tasaruru Whitely from the Nguna-Pele Marine and Land Protected Area Network on his solution
In the Pacific Islands, the ocean and its ecosystems provide food, income and livelihood and are the foundation of Vanuatu's island culture. Villagers have been witnessing the impacts of climate change for the past decade, and new ways of how climate change affects everyday life are appearing still. Vanuatu is highly exposed to natural disasters, threatening the country’s main industries: tourism and subsistence farming/fishing.
SPC/GIZ in partnership with Vanuatu’s Nguna-Pele Marine and Land Protected Area Network, is implementing a coral reef climate change adaptation project focused on coral gardening. Damaged coral reefs are restored, thereby contributing to climate change adaptation and eco-tourism revenue. Overseas visitors are invited to join in this planting activity, which allows them to contribute to a local development issue.
