Glaciers are among the most striking features of our planet, shaping landscapes, sustaining ecosystems, and providing vital freshwater to billions of people. In mountain regions, glacial meltwater supports drinking supplies, agriculture, and hydropower. Yet, due to rising global temperatures, glaciers are disappearing at an alarming rate, threatening ecosystems, economies, cultures, and livelihoods. UNESCO and GRID-Arendal jointly developed “Glaciers on the Edge”, featuring a selection of iconic glaciers located in Natural Heritage Sites around the world. With the collaboration between UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme, the Man and the Biosphere Programme, and the World Heritage Centre, the exhibition is showcasing the significance of having glaciers within these protected areas. The exhibition is based on UNESCO World Heritage sites and Biosphere Reserves that protect the world’s natural treasures, safeguarding 20% of all Earth’s biodiversity.
