Here in Mato Grosso, the Amazon has been exploited in the name of agriculture, with little regard for the environmental impacts. Sugar cane and soybean plantations have replaced hectare after hectare of jungle. Since 1988 Mato Grosso has lost more forest than any other state in the Brazilian Amazon and geometrical lines now scar the landscape as evidence of this.
