The only German National Park situated in the Alps, Berchtesgaden National Park was founded in 1978 and extends over a surface area of 210 km_. Human presence in the park dates back to the Neolithic Age (2500-2000BC). The high mountains within the park have remained relatively free of human disturbance due to extreme climatic conditions and difficulty of access.
