Tree plantation in Canada
With a vast territory of around ten million square kilometres, Canada is home to one third of the world’s boreal forests and close to half of Canada’s land area is forested. Being so rich in trees, Canada has become the world’s biggest exporter of timber, and the forestry makes up the corner stone of its economy. Currently, clearcutting and logging of frontier forests account for ninety percent of the logging activities, but gradually more sustainable practices are being adapted. Harvest rates and strict jurisdictions are set to ensure long term ecosystem sustainability, soil and water resources and approximately eight percent of Canada’s forests are under full protection.
