Old trees and tree trunks provide important habitats for insects, lichens and epiphytes. Oak trees in particular have some of the highest numbers of insect and lichen species living on them. In addition, old and dead trees are critical for many bird species and as many as one third of all woodland birds nest in holes or cavities of dead trees.
