Costa Rica has a long history of encouraging and facilitating sustainable tourism, and the country is at times referred to as ‘the birthplace of ecotourism’. This form of tourism is defined by the United Nations World Tourism Organization as one which “contributes actively to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage (…) includes local and indigenous communities (…) and interprets the natural and cultural heritage of the destination to visitors”. Canopy walkways give tourists a unique perspective into the rain forest.
