GRID-Arendal’s Role:

GRID-Arendal designed, developed, hosts, and maintains the official website for The High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution (HAC). Built using WordPress with a custom theme developed by GRID-Arendal, the website is available in English, Spanish, and French, ensuring accessibility to a global audience. The platform serves as a vital resource for sharing information, project updates, and research related to the coalition’s efforts to develop an ambitious international legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution by 2040. By providing this platform, GRID-Arendal supports the coalition’s mission and helps foster international collaboration to address the global plastic pollution crisis.

Project Description: The High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution (HAC)

Plastic pollution is a global crisis with devastating impacts on ecosystems, biodiversity, the climate, and human health. Without new and effective control measures, plastic production is expected to double within the next 20 years, and plastic waste leaking into the ocean is projected to triple by 2040. This unacceptable burden on future generations has prompted countries to unite in addressing the sources of plastic pollution.

The High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution was formed by a group of like-minded countries following the adoption of UN Environment Assembly Resolution 5/14, “End Plastic Pollution: Towards an International Legally Binding Instrument,” in March 2022. Co-chaired by Norway and Rwanda, the coalition is committed to developing an international legally binding instrument to address plastic pollution through a comprehensive and circular approach that takes urgent action along the entire lifecycle of plastics.

The coalition has set a common goal to end plastic pollution by 2040 and has outlined three strategic goals and seven key deliverables to achieve this ambition. These objectives focus on reducing plastic production, ensuring sustainable consumption, promoting circularity, and addressing plastic pollution from source to sea. The website provides information on the coalition’s goals, ongoing negotiations, and resources for stakeholders to stay informed and engaged.
