Soil and ice coring (Nunataryuk project)

Soil and ice coring is one of the methods used in permafrost research. Samples of frozen material are extracted in order to assess the organic matter content and chemical soil properties in the permafrost soil. Both of these features are central to the probability and quantity of climate-relevant greenhouse gas release from permafrost to the atmosphere. April 2019. The Nunataryuk research project aims to assess permafrost thaw along Arctic coastlines, study how it contributes to climate change, understand its impacts on indigenous communities and other people, and develop mitigation and adaptation strategies. The project brings together world-leading specialists in natural science and socio-economics and connects them with stakeholders from around the Arctic coast. Nunataryuk is an EU-funded Horizon 2020 project coordinated by the Alfred Wegener Institute in Potsdam, Germany.
