The Arctic is expected to be free of summer sea ice in the coming few decades. The loss of sea ice is connected to an acceleration in permafrost thaw and subsequent coastal erosion.
The
Nunataryuk research project aims to assess permafrost thaw along Arctic coastlines, study how it contributes to climate change, understand its impacts on indigenous communities and other people, and develop mitigation and adaptation strategies. The project brings together world-leading specialists in natural science and socio-economics and connects them with stakeholders from around the Arctic coast. Nunataryuk is an EU-funded
Horizon 2020 project coordinated by the
Alfred Wegener Institute in Potsdam, Germany.
