Before a field expedition to the Arctic, all scientific procedures must be carefully planned and practiced. Teams often set up practice sites near their labs. Here the Takuvik team from the University of Laval in Québec, Canada, has set up a practice site in a bend of the Mackenzie River. The team practiced ice drilling, ice coring, sediment coring, water collection, and deployment of optical sensors. April 2019.
The
Nunataryuk research project aims to assess permafrost thaw along Arctic coastlines, study how it contributes to climate change, understand its impacts on indigenous communities and other people, and develop mitigation and adaptation strategies. The project brings together world-leading specialists in natural science and socio-economics and connects them with stakeholders from around the Arctic coast. Nunataryuk is an EU-funded
Horizon 2020 project coordinated by the
Alfred Wegener Institute in Potsdam, Germany.
