Strengthening Conservation Policies and Actions: Biodiversity and Plastic Pollution in Sri Lanka
This Storymap, developed by GRID-Arendal with the invaluable support of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) and IUCN-Sri Lanka, offers a comprehensive overview of the interconnections between biodiversity and the plastics life cycle in Sri Lanka. Designed as a resource for policy-makers, researchers, and other stakeholders, it aims to highlight the environmental and socio-economic dimensions of plastic pollution and its impacts on biodiversity.
The Storymap builds upon insights from a recent scoping study that examined the short, medium, and long-term requirements for improving plastic life cycle management in Sri Lanka. By highlighting key challenges and opportunities, the study and accompanying issue brief provides a framework for addressing biodiversity loss linked to plastics while proposing actionable pathways to mitigate these impacts. These insights are contextualized within Sri Lanka's unique ecological and policy landscape, while also serving as a blueprint for other nations seeking to tackle the dual crises of plastic pollution and biodiversity decline.
Through interactive visuals, case studies, and actionable recommendations, this StoryMap serves not only as an educational tool but also as a catalyst for informed decision-making.
