Sanitation and Wastewater Atlas of Africa Workshop
A key tool for Sustainable Wastewater Management
October 13-14, 12:00-14:00, GMT +3, 2021
Africa is home to 15% of the world’s population, and its urban areas is expected to quadruple by 2040. With access to only 9% of global renewable sources of water, the pressure on Africa’s water reserves is increasing every year.
In Sub-Saharan Africa alone, 300 million people lack access to improved drinking water sources, and almost 700 million people lack access to basic sanitation. Knowing this, it is vital that moving forward development efforts are designed to address Africa’s water crisis in a specific, targeted and effective manner.
That is why, in February 2021, the Sanitation and Wastewater Atlas of Africa was launched. The Atlas is the flagship product for a four year collaborative project between the African Development Bank (AfDB), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and GRID-Arendal.
The Atlas contains chapters on Africa’s current wastewater streams, the impact that wastewater and sanitation has on Africa’s ecosystems, and human health, the Policy and Institutional Frameworks for wastewater and sanitation, applications for the circular economy, and country profiles.
On October 13-14, 2021, the African Development Bank, GRID-Arendal, United Nations Environment Programme and the African Ministers’ Council on Water is collaborating to host a two day workshop on the Sanitation and Wastewater Atlas of Africa.
