Along the East-Atlantic flyway the Porsanger fjord in Northern Norway with its extensive mud flats provides an important spring staging area for knots (Calidris canutus islandica) on their way from their wintering areas in western Europe to their breeding sites in Northern Greenland and Northeast Canada.
