Increasing awareness of environmental crime issues through financial support to investigative environmental journalists
The snare of the Sumatran tiger trade
This investigation is one of the winners of the 2022 GRID-Arendal Investigative Environmental Journalism Grants.
In Indonesia, conflicts between Sumatran tigers and humans occur every year. This protected animal has recently been seen appearing in people's plantations and often preying on livestock. During the pandemic, the hunting targeting Sumatran tigers has increased. The Sumatran tiger is now threatened with extinction. Deforestation has caused fragmented habitats and disrupted roaming trajectories, causing more and more tigers to stroll into areas adjacent to human settlements. This animal has also been plagued by trafficking crimes for a long time. Not only circulating in the domestic market, the Sumatran tiger has also become an international trade commodity.

Joni Aswira Putra
An assignment editor at CNN Indonesia TV with more than twelve years of experience as a journalist, starting from print media, online media, and television (video journalist). Joni is certified as a First Level Journalist by the Indonesian Press Council.
He has been dealing with a broad range of coverage topics, mostly the issues of transparency, law, human rights, economics, and the environment. Some of his environmental journalism works cover the stories of biodiversity or conservation, humanity, to issues related to environmental crimes and natural resources.
Joni has also been involved in producing a well-known documentary film in Indonesia entitled "The EndGame KPK (2021)", a documentary film that tells the story of how employees of a critical and independent anti-corruption agency were removed. This documentary is a voluntary collaboration project in the form of advocacy journalism. In this documentary, Joni is the special producer.
In addition, he also serves as Secretary General of The Society of Indonesian Environmental Journalists (SIEJ), the only environmental journalist organization in Indonesia that is incorporated and has more than 250 members nationwide. Joni plays a strategic role in making this organization a collaboration hub among NGOs, scientists, and the media. Joni often speaks in various forums about environmental journalism. He is also a two-time recipient of Pulitzer Center fellowships for conservation stories and the struggle for gender equality.
