Integrating The Informal Sector for a Stronger Repair Economy
20 Nov 2024
Repair is a vital component of the circular economy (CE), enabling the extension of product and material lifespans. The informal repair economy (IRE) plays a key role in maintaining material value, yet its contributions are often overlooked in business and policy discussions on CE. This omission is particularly critical given that over 61% of the global workforce operates in the informal economy. Among them, waste pickers represent one of the largest urban informal labor groups, serving as a cornerstone of local CE practices in cities.
However, current CE models predominantly focus on formal markets, leaving a significant gap in how circular practices address the needs and contributions of the informal recycling sector (IRS).
This discussion paper examines the key challenges and barriers that limit the IRS's participation in the repair economy. It also explores strategies to better integrate the informal sector into repair-focused CE initiatives.
