The University of the Arctic (UArctic) is a cooperative network of more than 200 universities, colleges, research institutes and other organizations concerned with education and research in and about the North. UArctic was created through an initiative of the Arctic Council.

GRID-Arendal has housed the office of the President of UArctic since 2002. UArctic leadership is based on networked collaboration, with the President's office in Norway and an international Secretariat at the University of Lapland in Finland. UArctic vice presidents are based at Oulu University (Finland), UIT-Arctic University (Norway), Northern Arctic Federal University (Russia), Nunavut Arctic College (Canada), Memorial University (Canada) and University of Alaska Anchorage.

This unique network fosters cooperation in education, research and outreach to enhance human capacity in the North, promote viable communities, sustainable economies, and forge global partnerships.

UArctic is built on more than 60 thematic network and institutes that promote issue-based collaboration between faculty and experts and the implementation of joint education and research activities. This is complemented by the north2north mobility program, national funding schemes that support network collaboration among members and tools like the online study catalogue promoting Arctic education from all members, funding opportunities overview, and an infrastructure catalogue.

Through its Rectors' Forum, UArctic links the Arctic higher education and research community with the Arctic Council, influences the Arctic research agenda and provides oversight over actors and the flow of funding to Arctic research.
