Fisheries depend exclusively on marine ecosystem services through food provision as well as habitat and water purification functions. As well, these fisheries support around 260 million jobs worldwide, both directly in fishing, and indirectly through all the sectors in the production chain (SDG8 promote full and productive employment and decent work for all); (SDG10 reduce inequality within and among countries). A significant proportion of these jobs are in small-scale fisheries in lower income countries, whereas higher income countries tend to have larger scale industrial fisheries (Teh and Sumaila 2011). Marine aquaculture is an increasingly important source of fish production and employment (SDG2 promote sustainable agriculture). This includes both employment provided directly at the farm level as well as non-farm opportunities in supply, processing and marketing activities.
