The breeding population of Barnacle geese from Novaya Zemlya, which winters in the Netherlands and stage in spring in the German and Danish Wadden Sea, has significantly increased in recent years, and is much bigger than the Greenland population (wintering in Ireland) or the small Svalbard population (wintering in England). In the Wadden Sea appears now also a new and increasing fourth population, derived either from Novaya Zemlya population or the Stockholm Zoo-population, which started 1975 breeding on the Baltic Sea islands (Estonia, Finland, Denmark, and Sweden), and meanwhile also in Germany, Denmark and Norway.
