Storm surge "Capella", January 3, 1976, Hilligenley, Hallig Langeness, Germany
The Gale of January 1976, widely known as the storm in Germany, was one in a series of extratropical cyclones and storm surges, which occurred over January 1976. The gale resulted in severe wind damage across western and central Europe and coastal flooding around the southern North Sea coasts. The people on the flat in the Northfrisian Wadden Sea are used to several floodings a year. However, this highest surge since long time resulted that also their houses went under water. The flood was the starting point of new coastal protection measures, which finally led to the creation of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea national park and discussions how to adapt to climate change.
