African elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Luangwa Valley, Zambia
Zambia is home to a large population of elephants. Numbers are especially high in the Luangwa Valley. Excessive poaching in the 1980's reduced the number of elephants to 1,000, but the population has since rebounded - a census in 2010 put the numbers in the country at 27,000. The same year, Zambia together with Tanzania campaigned to down list the elephant at the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES), which would have allowed Zambia to sell off its stockpiles of elephant ivory. Their request was subsequently rejected at the talks.
