Seagrass ecosystems do not occur in isolation. In the tropics, seagrass meadows typically exist in close proximity to mangroves and coral reefs, whereas in temperate locations, seagrasses are often connected to saltmarshes, kelp forests or bivalve reefs. The connectivity of ecosystems across the seascape suggests a direct transfer of carbon, nutrients and sediments, and is also important for the movements of marine fauna across different habitats.
