Why Mountains Matter for Energy: A Call for Action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

03 Feb 2014

This brief highlights the importance of mountain regions for energy-related issues and the need to integrate them into the sustainable development goals (SDGs), by proposing mountain-specific targets and indicators for the energy sector.

Mountains have considerable potential for sustainable energy production, through hydro-, wind, solar or geothermal power, which can benefit both remote mountain communities and downstream cities. However, many sustainable energy sources in mountains remain unused or underutilized. Further than the energy potential, developing sustainable energy solutions could bring numerous benefits to human health, the mountain environment and the global climate.

This brief was part of an overall initiative of the Mountain Partnership to mainstream mountain-related issues into the SDG process.
