Arendal, 29 March, 2022 – Tuesday and Thursday this past week were a real treat for participants at the Arctic PASSION Seminar Series, which began with Science Communication in focus.
GRID-Arendal Digital Video Expert, Olivia Rempel, gave two in-depth online seminars that were attended live by around 150 participants from around the world on ‘Storytelling in Science’ (22 March) and ‘How to produce media in the field’ (24 March). She trained those listening in identifying newsworthy stories, defining audiences and choosing the best medium for the story, as well as much more.
“Getting researchers more involved in storytelling is essential in avoiding disinformation, and for sharing important scientific information in an accessible and enjoyable way. I’m really glad I was able to share some of my media production and storytelling knowledge with such an engaged polar audience, and I hope it’ll help some of them think like storytellers when they head out to do fieldwork this summer!”

These two seminars were the beginning of an Online Seminar and Dialogue series run by Arctic PASSION, an EU-funded project that aims to build a coherent Arctic Observing System that is adjusted to societal needs based on a co-design of knowledge. The Arctic PASSION Online Seminar and Dialogue Series is a tool to communicate project’s topics, share ideas, plans and results, and to initiate an inclusive and proactive dialogue with people from different groups, backgrounds and career levels.
