Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) are increasingly being exploited by human activities including shipping, commercial fishing, deep sea mining and bio-prospecting. Because of this increasing use there is a need to ensure sound governance of these areas, with area based planning one of the tools to achieve this objective. This activity will focus on assessing the capacity of the Nairobi Convention and the Comisión Permanente del Pacífico Sur Regional Seas programmes and their member countries to undertake area based planning beyond national jurisdictions. It will also work closely with these two regional seas programmes to develop and pilot tools and approaches for area based planning in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ).
The project is a GEF funded project incorporating both FAO and UNEP. GRID-Arendal is involved in component 4 which is being co-ordinated by UNEP-WCMC and working closely with the Nairobi Convention and Comisión Permanente del Pacífico Sur.
