Restoring ecosystems could feed 740 million people
There are great potentials in restoring degraded land. Globally there are over 560 million hectares of degraded agricultural land (Oldeman 1992) that could be restored through sustainable agricultural practices and green investments. A conservative estimate suggest that if a quarter of these 560 million hectares of degraded agricultural land were restored, the food calorie increase could feed up to 740 million people. Rough estimates suggest that if the fish stocks were restored to the 1950s level, the increase in fish catch could cover the annual protein needs of over 90 million people.
