The First Ministerial Meeting of the Arctic Council was held in Iqaluit, Canada, September 17- 18, 1998. Iqaluit is the territorial capital and the largest community of the Canadian territory of Nunavut. Until 1987, it was called Frobisher Bay. Iqaluit is located on the south coast of Baffin Island at the head of Frobisher Bay. Inhabitants of Iqaluit are called Iqalummiut (singular: Iqalummiuq).
