About half of Greenland's population of 55,000 live in the towns and settlements along the West Coast, including Nuuk the capital. Enormous fjord systems and small rocky islands are typical of the whole region. Disco Bay, through which the large icebergs of the Icefjord float to the open sea, is one of the most visited scenic areas of Greenland. The Gulf Stream reaches this part of Greenland and prevents the sea from freezing over in the winter. The main occupation in the coastal towns is fishing for prawns and Greenlandic halibut.
