The mangrove and tidal flat habitats in the area of Lamu on the Indian Ocean coast of North-East Kenya, close to the border of Somalia, are known as some of the most extensive and species-rich along the entire coast of East Africa. They form a very important value in terms of biodiversity, climate protection (blue carbon), fishery, nature-based tourism and coastal protection. These values are presently threatened by plans to build a second port of Kenya north of Lamu, the ancient trade center of the Lamu Archipelago.
