The 818 km long Pyasina River flows with a huge delta into the Pyasino Gulf of the Kara Sea at the coast of the Taymyr peninsula. The Pyasina delta is besides the Taymyra delta the most important wetland in North-Siberia, where Brent geese (Branta b. bernicla) and other goose species spend their summer when being flightless during their moult of wing-feathers. The delta therefore became in 1993 part of the Great Arctic Reserve (Zapovednik). Before 1969 the local people (first people were moved there during the Stalin period in the 1930s) used to catch the flightless geese for food with their fishing nets.
