By 2017 Croatia has protected 9% of its territory by the establishment altogether 444 different kinds of protected areas. Among them are 8 national parks, of which Plitvice Lakes National park Plitvice is one of the oldest, the most visited and with 297km2 the largest national park in Croatia. In 1979, Plitvice Lakes National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
