Source to Seas – Zero Pollution 2030
SOS-ZEROPOL2030 aims to develop a holistic zero pollution framework to guide the process towards achieving zero pollution in European seas
A graphic story that reveals the hidden impact of tyre wear pollution
“In the Tread of Darkness” is an innovative comic book that transforms emerging science on tyre wear particle pollution into an engaging and accessible narrative. Through a blend of storytelling, visual metaphor, and evidence-based insights, the publication brings attention to a largely overlooked source of microplastic pollution.
The story follows a slightly dystopian lens, inviting readers to explore how everyday actions, such as driving, contribute to a growing and largely invisible environmental threat. By translating complex science into a visual format, the comic creates an entry point for audiences who may not typically engage with technical reports or policy briefs.
What You’ll Find
A narrative-driven storyline that follows the discovery and consequences of tyre wear particle pollution
Visual explanations of how tyre wear particles are generated, transported, and accumulated in soils, waterways, and oceans
Key scientific insights presented in an accessible and engaging way
Creative metaphors, including the character of “Treadzilla”, to illustrate scale and risk
Reflections on human health implications and environmental pathways
Why It Matters
Tyre wear particles are an increasingly significant source of microplastic pollution, yet they remain largely invisible in public discourse. On average, each person is responsible for generating an estimated 0.8 to 2.5 kilograms of these particles every year. Despite their scale, their impacts are still poorly understood and often overlooked in policy and behavioural responses.
This publication responds to that gap by shifting how environmental knowledge is communicated. Rather than relying solely on traditional formats, it uses creative storytelling to foster emotional connection, raise awareness, and support informed decision-making. By making the invisible visible, the comic helps inspire both individual reflection and collective action.
Aligned with GRID-Arendal’s commitment to transforming science into compelling stories, this publication contributes to elevating emerging pollution issues and encouraging more inclusive and impactful environmental communication.
