Mountains as the Water Towers of the World: A Call for Action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

03 Feb 2014

This brief highlights the importance of mountain regions for water-related issues and the need to integrate them into the sustainable development goals (SDGs), by proposing mountain-specific targets and indicators.

Mountains provide access to freshwater to half of the world’s population for drinking, domestic use, irrigation, industry and hydropower. Climate change, coupled with the increasing demand for water put increasing pressures on water resources, and due to the role of mountains as the world’s water towers, integrated and proper management of mountain water resources should be a global priority.

This brief was part of an overall initiative of the Mountain Partnership to mainstream mountain-related issues into the SDG process.
